Divas and dining at TWID, Battersea

On a recent visit to TWID, what puzzled me right from the start was the meaning of the initials. TWID stands for ‘That’s what I do’. What they do is amuse your senses whether it is oral and aural with the promise of live music and innovative food and cocktails. The location might be inconvenient for most, in a part of Wandsworth that isn’t close to any underground station. However, the trek to this part of town is well worth the visit to experience the exceptional offerings they provide.

The decor is a mind-boggling hybrid between a classical pub and a mini-baroque opera house, complete with balcony table service and an abundance of red velvet curtains.

The live music here comes in the form of live opera, which is performed 6 nights a week. We went on a quiet night when renowned soprano, Jane Fairlie performed many classic opera pieces. At times, it was done in an ingenious manner singing both the female and male parts and frequently involved her heading up to the balconies to personally serenade the diners.

The food somewhat surprisingly hit even higher notes than the soprano. Perky scallops were artistically arranged and paired with healthy doses of kale and raspberry. Quinoa stuffed mushroom was wholesome and filling with plenty of superfood salad, pine nuts and basil.

In fact, this is a great venue for those who are vegetarians, vegans or prefer raw food. Kimchi had spicy, well-fermented cabbage with kale once again and chilli flakes. More healthy food came in the form of raw vegan sushi terrine, although most diners would have preferred more than 2 pieces of sushi.

More substantial dishes came in the form of lamb cutlets which arrived with heritage beets and parsnips. Looking at such a stunningly well-arranged dish, you do wonder if the chefs have been classically trained in a hotel. In fact, they are 2 young Croatian chefs aged just 23.

Their raw desserts prepared by their master patissier are completely vegan-friendly and gluten-free. Strawberry cheesecake was delicious tasting even without gluten and not too heavy tasting. For those with a big appetite, I would recommend the sharing plate of all 4 cakes for a bargain £9.

The staff are great at making recommendations whether with food or the performances. We’ve already been sold on coming back on another night to see a duet of opera performers charming the diners of TWID.
