Top talent to watch out for in London for 2015

As the end of the first month of a new year looms and our heads are cleared by days of ‘Dry January’ (we stuck to it alright?), Mystic Townfish is looking into our crystal ball for 2015 to cast our predictions on the young London talent we should all be keeping our eyes peeled for in the weeks to come.

1. Kwabs- The Musician

Already taking his place amongst the BBC Sounds of 2015 nominees- a list compiled by industry experts that’s already broken huge acts such as Adele, Sam Smith and Haim- Bermondsey-boy Kwabs may not have take home the crown but hey, just being nominated was enough to get the likes of George Ezra and Tom Odell into the hearts and minds of the Great British Public.

Having said that, he seems to be doing just fine on his own with his futuristic soul and rich, emotive voice already charting heavily across Europe and grabbing him a contract with Atlantic Records.

BBC Sound 0f 2015 or not, this will be the year that Kwabs steps out of the underground and onto the main stage.

2. Tomos Parry- The Chef

Cutting his teeth with London stalwarts such as River Café, The Ledbury and Noma, it was whilst heading up the Kitchen at Climpson’s Arch in Hackney that Tomos Parry took the coveted spot of Best Chef at the ‘Young British Foodies’ awards in September of 2014. A flurry of appearances including a restaurant take-over at the Tate Modern (with gastronomic homages to his Welsh-heritage) followed but it will be his brand-new role as Head Chef at Kitty Fishers that’s really going to put Tomos on the culinary map this year. Having freshly flung open its doors and located in the gorgeous Georgian square of Shepherd Market in Mayfair, if you want to know what 2015 tastes like, we suggest you book now.

3. Dina Asher Smith- The Athlete

Currently the World Junior Champion for sprinting, Dina Asher Smith is one of Britain’s most promising young sports stars. Aged only 19, when not smashing it out on the tracks representing Great Britain across the globe, she has also used her academic prowess to gain herself a place at King’s college reading History. Let’s pray there’s still plenty of time for her sporting endeavours though- all being well, she could be one of our highest hopes when it comes to the IAAF World Championships in Beijing this Summer- a win that would see her take her place amongst more senior peers.

4. Oliver B- The Magician

Step aside Dynamo, there’s a hot,new young magician in the house. Charming, handsome and erudite, Oliver B is fast rising through the ranks of performers that prove that magic is not just for naff kiddie’s birthday parties. Wowing the crowds (including One Direction hunk Niall Horan) at the Brit Awards, smashing a set at Apple’s corporate gathering and garnering praise from everyone from Roger Federer, Jon Bon Jovi, Tinchy Stryder, Paris Hilton, Andy Murray and even (would you believe it) Simon Cowell- if you like modern smartphone trickery, fluffy bunnies and genuine WTF? moments then make sure you get out and catch Oliver at show before the closest you can get is on a TV screen.

5. Min Wu- The Fashion Designer

Having only graduated from the London College of Fashion in 2013, Min Wu is making waves across the fashion world with her bold yet elegant fluid womenswear, combining dip dyes and 3D elements to make truly modern pieces. With her own display at the British Fashion Council’s International Fashion Showcase and named as One To Watch by Fashion Scout, she may not have been out working in the industry for long but with the successes already under her belt and a clear design identity, we’re expecting big things from Min in the coming year.
