Exclusive Dining at Shepherds of Westminster

Shepherds

The re-launch of Shepherds of Westminster is in full swing with new head chef Karl Goward in charge of the kitchen. None of the intrigue has been lost from the famed Westminster institution, the beautifully appointed dining room still maintains its private members club atmosphere, individual booth-style tables giving sophisticated exclusivity for dinners, whilst maintaining friendly and warm service.

With over 20 years experience in the industry, internationally renowned chef Karl Goward’s previous positions include senior sous-chef at iconic restaurant St John, from where he moved on to open St John Bread and Wine at Spitalfields and the Drapers Arms; all of which rated Michelin Bib.

The stamp of good seasonal British ingredients is skilfully displayed on Shepherds menu, with each plate relishing in quality of produce, brought to life with slow cooking techniques and fresh seasoned accompaniments. Starters consisted of steamed Cornish mussels, the juicy delicate morsels basking in a leek and tarragon sauce. The key to the perfect mussel dish is freshness, and these Cornish delights hit the mark. A crisp salad of red gem lettuce, preserved tomatoes, red onion and anchovy provided a light and refreshing beginning to the meal with well balanced flavours.

Mains of perfectly cooked plaice arrived alongside glistening butter shrimp sauce, luxuriously coating the delicate flesh and resulting in a rich melt-in-your mouth experience. 48 hour slow cooked lamb topped with creamy mash made its mark centered with bone marrow, bringing together a decadent version of the much-loved classic Shepherds pie. There is definite consistency and style on the menu at Shepherds, the desert list hints at nostalgic comfort food favourites with modern reinvention, such as blackberry trifle, baked rice pudding, and everyone’s favourite syrup sponge – sticky, sweet and moreish just as you remember it.

The atmosphere at Shepherds presents itself as the sort of place guests can comfortably and discreetly slip into for a drink or two. The notably extensive wine list offers something for everyone with bottles priced under £30 and rising prices there on for big players, whilst the bar is amply stocked for creating classic cocktails or a pre / post dinner aperitif.

Tucked away between Vincent Square and Smith Square and showcasing on the ground floor of the art deco Marsham Court, navigating around the back streets of Westminster to Shepherds is a fascination in itself, with the beautiful architecture, well-documented history and sense of cultural importance setting the scene for a wonderful dining experience.
