Old Salt Quay: Roast and Barbecues on the Waterfront

If you’ve ever taken a trip down stream with the Thames Clippers river boat service you may have noticed a large circular pub as you wind round towards the Isle of Dogs. This pub is now named The Old Salt Quay.

Formerly known as Spice Island, The Old Salt Quay is highly popular amongst the locals for its traditional Sunday roast carvery and a spacious beer garden which overlooks Canary Wharf across the water. If you’re arriving for roast head upstairs to the restaurant, here you will find the house chef serving the most mouth-watering selection of hot carvery items at the hot counter. It costs just £10.99 per person for a generous portion of two meats (the usual choice is beef, chicken or gammon) and a broad range of trimmings including cauliflower cheese, broccoli, carrots, leeks, roast potatoes, parsnips, sage stuffing, a giant yorkshire pudding, and even homemade pork crackling.

Often in the summer when the weather is good they lay on a Barbecue, which includes a great range of gourmet burgers for around £8, but make sure you are not in a rush as there is usually quite a wait – it can take up to an hour for the food to arrive due to popularity. If the weather is sunny the Old Salt Quay makes a wonderful place to sit and drink with friends, and the Sunday carvery is an absolute must for all traditional roast fans.
