How to spend Mothers Day in London 2015

St Ermins afternoon Tea

She’s fed you, clothed you, ferried you around like an extremely fragrant taxi driver and devoted years of her life to shaping you into the fine, upstanding member of society you are today- this March 15th, London has a super selection of ways to thank your Mum for being a multi-skilled wonder woman. Here are Townfish’s top tips to show your love to the most important woman in your life…

1. Afternoon Tea at St Ermins

To the soothing sound of a string quartet, treat your mother to a seriously sumptuous afternoon tea that won’t break the bank. For 49 p.p, you will be greeted at this elegant example of a late Victorian hotel by a chilled glass of champagne (but of course) followed by oodles of traditional finger sandwiches, warm scones, Newby teas and sweet treats such as Red Velvet and White Chocolate cake and Strawberry Posset… trust us, this will ensure that you’re the golden child for weeks to come.

2.Grimm Tales For Young & Old

Time to tell your ma a bedtime story for a change- getting into the dark origins of famous fairy tales from Hansel & Gretel to the Frog King, this immersive theatre production from the award-winning author Philip Pullman is guaranteed to give Mum a surreal, interactive day to remember. Sack off the West End and get yourselves down to the Bargehouse for some culture with a difference.

Ongoing until April 11th

3.Rick Stein’s Foodie Weekend Away

Take your Mummy far from the madding crowd this Mother’s Day for a gastronomic weekend away in Padstow, Cornwall. With four poster beds, decorative fireplaces, homemade truffles, a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a stellar three courses for two at Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant at a mere 218 quid for the pair of you, you’ll be racking up those gold stars in no time.

4.Wine Tasting at Vinopolis

Kicking off with a chilled glass of Canard-Duchene champagne, this exploration through wines of the world is a must-do for any Mums who know their spicy, fruity Australian ‘Shiraz’ from their earthy French ‘Pinot Noir’… or indeed, any Mums who just think wine is really bloomin’ tasty. Housed in an old Victorian viaduct by Borough Market, give her a little bit of what she really wants this March. Cheers!

5.Mudchute Farm

For those mummies with high-energy little ones (or indeed, those with more green-fingered sensibilities), Mudchute Farm is the ideal family day out this Mother’s Day. Set in 32 acres of countryside in East London (would you believe it?), this working farm is newly-refurbished, family run and free to enter. Meet and greet over 100 varieties of animal, get up close and personal with cuddly creatures in the pet’s corner or just grab a bite to eat in the Mudchute kitchen with the most beautiful view over the paddocks.

6.Thames RIB Experience

Nothing says ‘I love you’ like strapping your mother into a speed boat with twin turbo thrust and sending her hurtling down the Thames to a medley of James Bond soundtracks. With a variety of awesome routes to choose from, this is one for the adventurous mums out there who aren’t ready to celebrate their day with a pot of tea and a box of smellies just yet. Book online, choose your embarkation pier, wrap up warm and prepare to see London like never before.

7.‘Women Fashion Power’ Exhibition

Perfect for ex-punks, catwalk kittens or those of a somewhat more conservative sartorial learning alike, ‘Women Fashion Power’ from the Design Museum explores female self-expression through fashion- taking in everyone from Naomi Campbell to Margaret Thatcher via Vivienne Westwood and spanning a timeline of over 150 years…. this is the ULTIMATE Mother and daughter day out. 8.80 a head you say? Well now, that’s a bargain.

8.Roast at Hawksmoor

It’s a roast Jim but not as we know it. If Bisto gravy and dry spuds are not exactly what you had in mind for Mother’s Day then you’d best be getting your family booked in for the ultimate meatstravaganza at one of Hawksmoor’s five London steak restaurants. With British-bred native cattle, buttered greens and lashings of creamy mash… join the roast revolution. More power to ya.

9.Pamper Day at the W Hotel

Come on now, it would not have been a Mothering Sunday article without at least one option to pamper the living daylights out of her. The ultra-modern and sleek-as-you-like W Hotel just off the madness of Leicester Square would be our Townfish pick for 2015. At 85 a head including a glass of champagne, treatments and full use of spa & gym, their signature day will whisk you both worlds away from London’s gritty centre- plus you have the extra-added bonus of being super close to China Town when you get a bit peckish which I think we can all agree, can only be a good thing.

10.Classic Carboot Sale

If memories of childhood trips to car boot sales with Mum are a terrifying montage of chipped vases and tortured Stretch Armstrongs then it’s time to wipe that slate clean. This classic car boot sale on London’s iconic South Bank is a bounty of vintage treasures, antiques, street food stalls and live music that promises to be the ultimate retail bonding session. Don’t forget to wear your glad rags for the soul ‘n’ funk infused after party at Topolski bar if you’re going on the Saturday.
