Live At Zedel: Cocktails, lights and action in the heart of Soho

With the abundance of space in the grand art deco French restaurant that is Brasserie Zedel, it made perfect sense to open up a venue space that is dedicated to events such as comedy, theatre and literary events. Zedel had been running the crazy coqs cabaret for a number of years but thought it was time to freshen up their performance concept and open up the venue to younger audiences.Brasserie Zedel restaurant interior

We went along to one of their scoundrels comedy night to experience cutting edge stand-up comedy. It was a mostly hits and very few misses affair with up-and-coming stars of the comedy scene. It did start off awkwardly when comedian Phil Jerrod criticised the lukewarm nature of the audience’s responses. Perhaps we hadn’t imbibed enough of the classic cocktails from their stylish bar? The laughometer level did rise rapidly with the following two acts: Sean McLoughlin who has supported Doc Brown and Katherine Ryan on their national tours and Kerry Goldman who has starred in ‘Live at the Apollo’ and appeared in Ricky Gervais’ sitcom ‘Derek’.The Crazy Coqs

Other highlights from their upcoming programme include classical music from the Philharmonia Orchestra, drag supergroup DENIM, diverse singing performances from Matt Cardle to Reuben James. There is also ‘after hours’ where the lights are dimmed, the tables are moved aside and the dancing begins alongside sumptuous live jazz performances. Tickets prices are extremely reasonable with the comedy nights ranging from £12-16.

Of course, you should combine a visit to the restaurant pre or post theatre show. Apart from elegant, classical surroundings, they also offer very reasonably priced menus. They have a prix fixe menu at 2 courses for just £9.75, but of course they also have luxurious offerings like lobster cocktail and classic Parisian ribeye steaks.

I would recommend their classic French dishes like escargots with parsley butter: it is richly flavoured with herbs and perfect for dipping with their French baguettes. Although I would strongly suggest brushing up on your French prior to visiting, as they offer a French menu with an English version available on request.Brasserie Zedel escargots

For main course, I tried a very classically cooked red mullet, elegantly seared and flavoured with olives, anchovy dressing with healthy doses of roasted tomatoes, green beans and potatoes.Brasserie Zedel seared red mullet

For those proclaiming the premature death of Soho, they should take a diversion to see some captivating performances at Live At Zedel and enjoy traditional French cuisine at their brasserie.
