The Globe: Shakesphere on Southbank

Some of you may wince at the thought of an evening with Shakespeare, but whether you are fan or foe, there is something pretty special about paying homage to our country’s greatest playwright in the theatre capital of the world. Throw in a stunning venue, the open air, and a calibre of actors that could make poetic verse of the phone book, and you get Shakespeare’s Globe.

Overlooking the River Thames, The Globe is dedicated to the performance and exploration of our beloved bard’s greatest work. Even those who liken his text to double-dutch or gobbledy-gook will struggle against the sheer quality of the cast and creative’s as they bring his tragedies and comedies to life. I always forego a gallery seat in favour of the five pound yard ticket, where you can raise a drink and holler amongst the other groundlings. The rowdiness of yesteryear is no longer encouraged, but a bit of direct address and banter with the actors is often included. The season runs until October, and if you want my recommendation: get yourself down there quick smart for Much Ado About Nothing, starring the effervescent Eve Best and Charles Edwards.
